Ryan Watson on the mindset behind building wealth

Our CEO, Ryan Watson, recently featured in The Australian discussing the growing wealth gap in Australia. While the divide between the nation’s highest and lowest household net worth is significant, Ryan believes mindset, discipline and goal-setting play a far greater role in building wealth than many people realise.

Mindset over money

Ryan says that while starting with a large sum of money can make growing wealth easier, it’s not a prerequisite for financial success. “You get what you focus on,” he says. “A lot of wealth-building strategies are available if you know where to look. The key for middle Australia is to get informed, do your research, and invest the time. In my opinion, 85 per cent of the battle with anything is mindset.”

Wealthy Australians, Ryan explains, tend to make deliberate use of their resources—whether that’s surrounding themselves with trusted advisors, using their networks to uncover opportunities, or harnessing the power of compound interest to multiply returns over decades.

They also avoid emotional decision-making, focusing instead on long-term strategies and calculated risks. “They use their friendship circles to generate a financial leg-up,” Ryan says, highlighting the importance of learning from others and staying connected to new ideas.

For everyday Australians, Ryan’s advice is clear: adopt the mindset, structure and habits of successful investors, regardless of your starting point, and commit to building wealth steadily over time.
