Why people must come first in any relationship


In our latest client story, Pip Turnbull talks about the most important part of any relationship – the person.

It’s hard to keep up with Pip. Passionate and driven, she knows what she wants and is willing to put in the hard yards to achieve it. This has seen her become an Executive Director at leading building company Johns Lyng Group (JLG), as well as put her energy and skills to good work as a committee member for the annual Starlight Foundation Starball.

It’s fair to say Pip pushes Tribeca as much as we push Pip – and we love this type of client relationship. It’s equal, honest and supportive. And most importantly, it’s a shared journey.

Here’s Pip’s story.

It’s all about people

My role at JLG is all about customer relationships. Anyone who knows me knows I’m a people person. So when I approached Tribeca for financial advice, how they treated their clients was top of my list.

Well, when I first met them and they had a coffee ready (and it was how I like my coffee), they certainly started off on the right foot. But it wasn’t really about the coffee (although it was nice), it was that they took the time to get to know me, even before we had built the relationship.

It’s now been four years, and I really feel like part of their family. It’s that personal touch. Like when my advisor, Mariana, came to our auction when we were buying our most recent home. She didn’t have to but she wanted to. Things like that go above what they’re needing to do.

Tough love when we need it

With the help of Tribeca we’ve been quite smart in the way we’ve set up our structure, such as opening up separate Vanguard accounts off their advice. They’re good at making us aware of what we spend – it can be a bit frightening to see the figure. But I like having that accountability, even though we may not want to hear it at times.

For us it’s about having that structure and balance. To be able to save but also enjoy the things we love. To know everything is in a good place, including things like our insurances  and superannuation. It’s great to have that sense of security and freedom.

And because of their advice and recommendations, I now have a far greater understanding of finances in general. I’ve been able to learn a lot along the way which I’ve really valued.

More than finances

If you’re talking about a person’s finances you need to understand their life, their lifestyle and personality, and what makes them tick to be able to assist them properly.

Tribeca get this.

They’ve been very good at steering us through the ups and downs of life. They’re like a safe haven and always here for you. I know I can call Mariana anytime; in fact I often call while I’m going for a walk and we just chat about life to start with. I think that’s nice that you can have someone who is professional but also a confidant – a friend.

There’s a real human element to them. Caring and kind. They genuinely want to know you as a person.

The right balance

Although I love looking towards the next thing, the last few months has highlighted how important it is to enjoy the simple things in life and not be so hectic and caught up on this crazy merry-go-round.

I’m now more conscious of sitting back a bit and enjoying what we’ve got. 

I feel very lucky that my husband and I are really starting to live that Good Life. We’ve worked really hard for it, and I’m certainly grateful for Tribeca being there to support us.
