A fresh list of podcasts to keep you entertained and informed.
By now you’ve probably been asked by family, friends and colleagues for your recommendations on what to read, watch or listen to. Well, we thought we’d get in on the act, and have asked our Tribeca Tribe to offer up their favourite books, TV shows and podcasts.
For our first Tribeca Top Ten, we’ve put together a selection of must-listen podcasts that cover topics from financial wellbeing and personal development through to extraterrestrials.
Financial wellbeing podcasts
This award-winning podcast has just finished its fourth season, with journalist Jan Fran having taken over the reins from the hilarious Claire Hooper who hosted the first three seasons. It’s well worth (pardon the pun) starting with season one, which navigates the treacherous waters of managing your money; from getting out of debt and buying your first property to money and relationships. With other seasons extending to topics around work, home and death, The Pineapple Project is high-quality reporting and storytelling at its best.
Described as like “Hamish and Andy for your finances”, hosts Glen James and John Pidgeon put a light-hearted lens on discussing finances, covering topics from spending and tax though to side hustles and rewards points. A great mix of expert insights, practical money tips, humour and banter.
Farnoosh Torabi is an award–winning financial correspondent, best–dselling author and television personality. The New York Times calls her approach “perfectly practical,” and she brings candid conversations about money with the world’s top business minds, authors and influencers.
We couldn’t have a list without including Dave Ramsey, one of the most listened to financial podcasts in the word with 14 million combined weekly listeners. In addition to his own show that offers practical advice on life and money, he also has a number of contributors and experts who host different shows across his Ramsey Podcast Network.
Ten years ago researcher/storyteller Brene Brown became an overnight sensation when her TEDx Talk exploded across the globe. Since then her ground-breaking research and learnings around vulnerability has seen her write bestselling books, consult to the likes of NASA, and now produce one of the most listened to podcasts in the world – Unlocking Us. Her purpose is to “explores the ideas, stories, experiences, books, films, and music that reflect the universal experiences of being human, from the bravest moments to the most brokenhearted.”
Talking of TED Talks, it’s hard to find a better collection of podcasts to inspire, challenge and leave you wanting more. Beginning in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged; TED’s presenters cover topics (in under 18mins) from science to business global issues – all grounded in the philosophy that ideas have the power to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. A new TED talk in podcast form is available every weekday.
Tim Ferriss is an icon among entrepreneur icons. The best-selling author recognised for “The 4-Hour Workweek”, Tim offers up plenty of his own gold while pulling nuggets of wisdom out of A-list guests, like Arnold Schwarzenegger and LeBron James. His purpose is to figure out what makes a true entrepreneur tick.
Who doesn’t like Andrew Denton? If you haven’t caught up on this podcast, you’re in for a treat. Follow along as Andrew interviews fascinating people from around the world, finding out who they are away from the headlines. The podcast, a companion to his TV series, features material that didn’t get to air and behind the scenes insights into Andrew’s motivation and approach.
Looking for something totally different? Got a theory on extraterrestrial life? Then this podcast is definitely for you. Every Tuesday, the hosts examine reports of different alien encounters, and land on the most plausible explanation. Is there a more grounded explanation for these incidents, or is there really something lurking out there? You be the judge.
Here’s one for the sports nuts. Respected sports journalist Mark Howard sits down with the biggest names in Australian and world sport, finding out how they started out, what makes them tick, how they deal with the big wins and the big losses, and how they combine sport and life. From ultimate highs to tear-jerking lows, Howie lifts the lid on the real stories behind the headlines.
