A day in the life of… Peter Higgins

Peter Higgins financial advisor Sydney

Nothing is more satisfying for Peter than helping a client set a financial or life goal – and then work hand in hand to see them reach it. It’s why empowering people with holistic financial advice has framed his career over 10+ years, and led him to join Tribeca with our aligned values and purpose. Peter’s drive certainly doesn’t slow down outside of work, from chasing Hops (his beloved bulldog) to chasing after his two young children. It’s a life filled with adventure and new possibilities.

A snapshot into the lives of our Tribe

Getting to learn about our clients’ lives is one of the best parts of our job. With this in mind
we thought we’d take a peek into the daily lives of our own Tribe so you can get to know
them a little better.

This time, the spotlight is on Peter Higgins, Partner and Senior Adviser at Tribeca, based in the Northern Beaches of Sydney.

My morning

I start early with gym training, family time, then focus on client conversations and team connection across our offices.

I wake up and head to training at the gym in Freshwater, about a ten-minute drive from home on Sydney’s northern beaches. I train with a group of mates, including one who is a personal trainer which keeps us all accountable, then finish the session with a 15-minute sauna. We’re committed to this routine three times per week as it allows us to stay connected whilst juggling work and family commitments.

I return home and help get the kids breakfast. I have two children – Winny and Marigold – and Hops the bulldog. I grab a black coffee and banana, then drop the kids to daycare and preschool, just five minutes from home. I grew up on the northern beaches and what I love about it is that all my family live within a 10-15 minute drive. It’s a beautiful place to live with about 40 surf beaches, though I’m not a surfer – I’m an ocean swimmer with the Frigid Frogs at South Curl Curl Rock Pool.

Leadership meeting. We focus on messaging that we want to prioritise as a leadership team and make sure that gets dispersed amongst the broader team.

All Tribe meeting. I love this meeting because its important to understand what everyone else is doing and hear client stories about why we do what we do. Since Im based in Sydney and most of the team are in Melbourne, I don’t hear these things in real time. When I hear that someones done great work helping a client, it’s motivating. For me, the All Tribe meeting is about connection.

Client call. We discuss whats happened in markets and what we’re doing in response. This conversation was with a self-employed client about what their income will look like before the end of the financial year and whether it’s worth making an additional contribution to superannuation.

Preparing for a Discovery Appointment with Sophia, our up-and-coming associate adviser. We identify the main topics of conversation with a client based  on their initial call and profile, focusing on areas where we think the client will see the most benefit.

My afternoon

I guide new clients through their financial strategy, mentor our Associate Adviser Sophia, then wrap up early for family time.

Discovery Appointment with a new client via Teams. They’d received an inheritance and had a high degree of financial wellbeing in the present, but no clear goals. The meeting was about asking them what they wanted to do, setting them in the right direction, talking about what their future looks like, and structuring things so they’re not paying too much tax. They’re retired, single with adult children and grandchildren, and were referred by another client.

Post-meeting wrap-up with Sophia. We finalise file notes, confirm next steps, and send the follow-up email. This post-meeting discussion is valuable time for Sophia to learn. The client was confident with our discussion and presentation, so we booked their next meeting in 3 weeks to present their Strategy.

I check our CRM which prompts me with what calls to make to clients, respond to emails, and log into our advice CRM to complete jobs or move them to my ‘admin time’.

I finish a bit early so I can pick up the kids before heading to the airport. Marigold is at family day care and Winnie at preschool. I get them ready for early dinner at 5pm – sometimes that means I’m hungry again later so a second dinner is required at 8:00pm!

Some prefer client meetings first thing in the morning, but I prefer afternoon meetings if I can so I can get my admin duties (execution of advice) completed first.

My evening

I make the trip to Melbourne, stay with a friend, and savor some quiet adult time.

Drive to the airport. It’s an hours drive and I always prebook Fastpark which is 70% less). I prebook an Uber comfort so I don’t need to wait in the long Uber line when I land.

Flight to Melbourne. I’m not a good flyer, so I try to find something to watch that’s a good distraction.

Arrive at my mate Dave’s place in Fitzroy. He leaves a fresh jar of pretzels and an ever-stocked lolly jar, with cold beer in the fridge. He lives in a warehouse conversion with a big screen projector – quite a change from the Wiggles or Bluey at home! We often head to The Napier for a Guinness and dinner. I always enjoy coming to Melbourne and staying with a close mate gives me a little breather from the chaos of home life
